Some feedback needed please..........New generation refrigerants.

We were asked to repair a domestic fridge with R600 refrigerant. As it was a built in model it was a bit out of the ordinary so agreed to look at it. The condenser pipe had been rubbing against somthing in the encolsure Rubbed a hole in the pipe allowing the gas to escape. The compressor was tested and found OK, then the thought was to change the refrigerant to another gas (this was R600)but we investigated that the R600 compressor displacement was too large and the cost to replace the compressor would be too high. The technician therefore, carefully blew nitrogen through the system and replaced the damaged pipe section. After the evaccuation of the system and sourcing some R600 the "techie " broke the vacuum to about 20psig, started up the compressor with back pressure of 0psig and a head pressure of about 80psig. Wasn't long before the suction line was covered in ice. Back to the compressor.

Proceeded to turn off the unit, expel the gas, repeat this 3-4 times over the next hour or so until the frost came backfrom the compressor and the freezer came down to below -20degC. The back pressure now at 8-10 of vacuum and the head at what seemed a very low 50psig. After investigation of pressure charts for R600 refrigerants, this was deemed as OK

With minimal recent experience with domestic repairs, R600 was a little surprising. This refigerant may be OK in small systems of a few grams charge, but would be a little scarry in larger systems. Not for older fella's like me- (can't run fast enough Lol) Let me know your experiences with new generation refrigerants so we can keep up to date and in the loop
